15+ Travel Apps every Backpacker has to have!

This blog post will give you a perfect overview of the best travel apps you need to have as a frequent traveler. All of these apps will help you with your travels in many ways. Some help you find cheap flights, others the best accommodation, and some offer options for different adventures at your destinations!

1. Skyscanner

This is my favorite app ever! This app gives you a great overview of all the flights going to your desired destination, showing you the cheapest options and the best platforms you can book those on. I can only book my flights through Skyscanner now. Keep in mind that you have to book the flight through different cities because Skyscanner is just the middleman, but it will give you the site where the flight is the cheapest. There is also a great feature for you where you will find the cheapest flights from one place to anywhere in the world. A feature for the adventurous travelers among you who still want to look out for their budget!

2. Get your guide

In getting your guide, you can book great trips in the city where you are staying. Adventures and small tours around the city with different activities from cooking classes to walking tours and much more.  Of course, depending on the city or place you are looking for an adventure. You can book all of these easily on the app. Most of the activities I booked when traveling, I did on GetYourGuide, because it is easy to handle and gives you a perfect list with details about the activities before and during the trip.

3. Klook

This app is similar to Get Your Guide but also gives you cheaper tickets for ferry rides and other transportation options. Mostly, I use this app for tickets for entry to zoos, museums, etc. So, there are activities that don´t need a guide. On Klook there are often also combo tickets for different activities together.

4. Komoot

Komoot is a must for hiking and nature sports people. On this app, you will find different hiking trails as well as cycling routes near you.  This app showed me hidden gems during my travels in Sweden, for example, and is the first place I look for when I want to go hiking in an unknown area.

5. Hostelworld

A must for every backpacker! The easiest and most comfortable way to book hostels all around the world! A great overview where you can see at first glance the price, location, and rating. This app also provides a chat function, where you can chat with travelers also staying in this hostel. A great way of meeting new friends abroad.

6. Flightaware

To be honest, this app is more my dad’s favorite than it is mine. On this app, you can live-track flights. He always watches my flights to make sure I land safely. But this is also good for you, travelers themselves, to see if your flight is delayed way before it is displayed on the flight board. Because of that, my friend app me and told see way before, that our flight to Sicily would be 3 hours delayed and we could go and get food and didn´t need to wait at the gate any longer.

7. Trainline

This is the train version of what Skyscanner is to flights. This app helps me find the best and cheapest trains in Europe. So everywhere I want to go around Europe, it will give you the best trains to take, and it is also super cheap to book!

8. Uber

I don´t think I have to say too much about Uber, right? Cheaper than taxis for sure.

9. Splitwise

I love this app when traveling with my friends! On this app, you can track all the expenses you have incurred while traveling. So when you pay for all of your friends, you can log that in the app, and it will split the costs according to the selected preferences. The app is free, but it has a limit on the expenses you can incur per day per person. For me, the free version is good enough. I would just wait until the next day to put my expenses into the app when the limit is reached. At the end of your trip, the app calculates how much you owe others or how much they owe you.

10. Citymapper

This app helps you get around cities more easily. Starting from Transportation in all the cities, giving you the best options for getting from A to B. It also shows you the electronic sharing vehicles. Because sometimes we know that Google Maps is not the most reliable in terms of public transportation in big cities. In this case, Citymapper is perfect.

11. Tripadvisor

This also gives you many options of things you can do in your searched destination. Having many different must-see options tested them personally, as well as great food tips in different price classes. Their recommendations are great in every category, including accommodation. You probably have seen their logo sometimes on restaurants, etc. This shows that it is recommended by them and has been tested. Always a good choice for you to try out!

12. Booking

Also one of the most downloaded travel apps. Perfect for comparing different prices from hotels, hostels, and different accommodation types. A tip from us is to always book on booking.com because then you will get rewarded with points and can save money on trips.

13. Airbnb

Great when traveling with friends and wanting to have your own apartment or house. Just be aware of safety reasons and make sure to take necessary precautions to stay secure. Over the past few years, Airbnb has become the most popular app for travel accommodations and continues to grow.

14. VoiceMap

This travel app is actually a new discovery of mine, and I am currently still testing it out, but until now I really love working with it. It gives you many options in bigger cities to do audio guide tours for free. An amazing opportunity for people who like to do tours on their own and are flexible. The background information is very interesting, and it gives you a great opportunity to learn more about the city’s background whenever you want to.

15. Worldpackers

A very loved travel app by many backpackers. With this app, you can find volunteer work more easily all around the world. I know friends who found great adventures from Thailand to Dublin through this app. Finding people to meditate with, to working in hostels. On this app, you have to opportunity to find temporary work or adventure on their.

16. Workaway

First and foremost: This travel app is not free! But a great app for people who are looking for short-term work abroad as well. We paid our membership, which is around 50 Euros per year, but still didn´t get any responses from people about working opportunities. We think that a lot of people are on this app and searching for work abroad with the possibility of free living options. The risk is yours…

17. Trusted Housesitters

This is also a travel app for people who a looking for free accommodation in return for work. In particular, for sitting in a house with pets. We also had to pay to be on this travel app, but again were not able after a lot of hustle to find the perfect house for us. We were for sure also part of the problem because many houses are, of course, only available during a distinct period of time and mostly not at the time it fitted for us.

These were the travel apps I would recommend for every traveler to make their life a bit easier. Make sure to inform yourself when traveling to foreign countries, as there are travel apps that are important to have, especially in some Asian countries.

We hope this post helped you with your future travels and that you decide to install some of them for better travels. You have probably seen many of these travel apps already, but hopefully, some of them were new to you. If you have other suggestions for travel apps, don´t hesitate to let us know! Live a life to remember!

Emma

About the Author:
If Emma were a word, she would be „daydreaming“ - the kind of daydreaming that feels more active than dreamy. No matter where she is, you’ll catch her thinking about the artsy city of Melbourne, wishing to take a walk through Central Park, dreaming of seeing the Northern Lights, and so on. The list is long. What’s adorable and also very impressive is that Emma doesn’t stay lost in the haze of her dreams; it won’t be long before the first opportunity appears, and she’ll be on her way to fulfill them.
