Call it Stick Season in Vienna!
Soon it’s time to grab your favourite sweater, your beloved scarf, and the chunky Doc Martens that have been waiting in your closet for months. All for that first hot drink in a cozy café, followed by a chill walk through Vienna’s autumn coloured streets.
Since the next season is almost here, I’ve put together 6 amazing autumn cafés in Vienna. And of course, I couldn’t have done it alone: all of these spots are actually my friends’ favourites. The places we always end up hanging out together. The best part? They’re vegan-friendly too.
Coffee first, questions later, let’s get started!
1.Blueorange
Alserbachstraße 1, 1090 Vienna
Location: 8.5/10 – not too busy, chill to sit outside, less touristy area
Price-Quality: 8/10 – really affordable, with good quality
Vibe: 10/10 Johanna’s forever recommendation
Taste: 9/10 – it’s really good
Blueorange is my favourite lesser-known cáfe. Almost all my friends have been there at least once with me, since it’s always my first recommendation. Even though the outside, as well as the interior don’t seem too special, it’s the vibe that caught my attention.
The staff are all pretty young and super chill, creating a nice atmosphere. They offer lots of amazing vegan options, from the best bagels, to delicious burritos, all-day breakfast, and tasty vegan desserts. Everything I tried so far was super delicious. Also the matcha, chai latte and their lemonades are always a dream!
The cafe is totally laptop-friendly and you can enjoy your time there for as long as they’re open. So if you’re in Vienna and you need a place to work, read, or write in your travel diary, this is the place to go.
2.GOTA Coffee Experts
Mariahilfer Str. 192, 1150 Vienna
Location: 7/10 – a little more outside the center, not too busy
Price-Quality: 9/10 – very fair prize for amazing quality
Vibe: 10/10 approved by Marie
Taste: 9/10 – best banana bread
If Blueorange is my forever recommendation, then GOTA Coffee Experts is the Blueorange of Marie. Her absolute go-to. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend hours, with plenty of seating inside, a sunny terrace outside, and it’s laptop-friendly too.
Their bagels are really good, but what really keeps me coming back is the banana bread. I’ve tried it in so many cafés, but nothing compares to GOTA’s
3.Cafe Kriemhild
Markgraf-Rüdiger-Straße 14, 1150 Vienna
Location: 10/10 – really quiet green area, the best place to sit outside
Price-Quality: 7.5/10 – it’s good
Vibe: 10/10 Anke’s favourite
Taste: 8.5/10 – love it
This is the place I always meet Anke. Her number one recommendation if you ever ask her where to go. Café Kriemhild feels really special. From the outside it looks like a super traditional Viennese café, but once you step in you realise it’s been taken over by young people. The vibes are immaculate.
There’s plenty of seating and luckily, it’s laptop-friendly. Outside, the atmosphere is really peaceful, and the trees along the street make it easy to forget you’re in the middle of the city.
Alongside delicious food, amazing chai, and matcha, they also have fun extras like a falafel pop-up or pizza from the restaurant next door, which you can order straight to the café.
4.Coffee Pirates
Spitalgasse 17, 1090 Vienna
Location: 7/10 – more central, a little busy since the street is right next to it
Price-Quality: 8/10 – affordable
Vibe: 10/10 basically Kathi’s home office
Taste: 8.5/10 – super nice
This is the place to go if you ask Kathi. As a student, it’s her top spot to study while sipping on a delicious iced matcha latte (in summer they even had a coconut version!). I’ve had more productive study coffee dates at Coffee Pirates than anywhere else.
The interior is beautiful and such a vibe. Very pink and mirrorball coded. It’s located close to the university campus, on a pretty busy street if you sit outside. But I usually have my headphones in anyway, so it doesn’t bother me when I have to be productive.
5.Burggasse 24
Burggasse 24/8, 1070 Vienna
Location: 10/10 – sweet area, super central, love everything about this place
Price-Quality: 7/10 – quite expensive, but usual for the area
Vibe: 10/10 Jana certified
Taste: 8.5/10 – very tasty
„Burggasse 24, let’s gooo“. That’s the way Jana would respond if you ask her where to enjoy your autumn coffee. A cáfe filled with incredibly nice vintage furniture and the greenest plants. It’s kinda chaotic, but everything somehow fits perfectly together.
If you ask me this would be the place to enjoy a really delicious black coffee. They offer great warm drinks perfect for the season, together with sweet and often vegan treats.
They have a nice outside area to sit, but I’d really recommend to go inside once, to check out the interior.
After you’re finished with your coffee, don’t miss out on the most amazing feature this cáfe has, which is a vintage shop right next to it. Sorted in colours it’s super fun to stroll through.
6.Mae Aurel
Salzgries 3, 1010 Vienna
Location: 8/10 – very central, but still in a more quiet area
Price-Quality: 7/10 – pricey and sometimes average food
Vibe: 10/10 Wiki’s go-to brunch base
Taste: 7.5/10 – overall good, great brunch options
Whenever you want to enjoy a nice brunch, Wiki knows a spot! Even though Mae Aurel is located in the first district, you’ll find it tucked away on a quiet street. Buses pass by now and then, but so slowly and quietly that it honestly surprised me. Sitting outside is really lovely!
The menu is packed with so many good options that choosing just one is almost impossible. I really loved how transparent it is too, since you can immediately see if a dish is vegan or vegetarian.
Somehow I ended up with a cup of tea and Stick Season playing on repeat. I’m so excited for this season and all the endless café writing sessions ahead. I’m really happy with this collection of autumn cafés in Vienna and let me tell you, my friends are not kidding when they share their favourite spots.
I have plenty more autumn cafés I could recommend in Vienna, so if you’re interested in a PART TWO, just let me know! Also check out this post for more: Vegan in Vienna – 10 best food spots
